Everything begins in Chaos. Each Element, every thing that we know, springs from that original, chaotic Nothingness. We live, we love, we dance, we die – all while reminders of where we came from shadow our every move. This concept is the inspiration for a new puppet ballet of Jean-Féry Rebel’s The Elements.
A collaboration between Robin Walsh and the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, this ballet builds upon one of the most innovative and imaginative musical works from the 18th century and embraces its “Chaos of harmony.” From the abstract to the figurative - it utilizes fabric, light, shadow, masks and puppetry. Everything on stage is created from flowing fabrics, projected lights and cast shadows. In a constant dance of coming together and breaking apart – the Elements of Fire, Water, Air and Earth form animals and humans - only to separate and become something new. Yet true to the spirit of the music, the ballet remains personal. For after the abstractions and grand beginning – the music and puppetry reveal the simple story of the intimate grandeur of Life.
The Elements premiered in November, 2014 in Denver, Colorado as part of the BCOC’s 2014-2015 season.
